Over the last few weeks Jay Crawford (LSUM Field Manager) and I have conducted geological mapping and geochemical sampling with a Niton x-ray florescence analyzer (XRF) in support of our proposed near surface mining program. From observation and XRF readings, we have discovered green copper oxides in/on the surface rocks (in part inferred because of alluvial cover) covering several square miles of the Hay Mountain Project.

Further, the limestone host rock is strongly shattered over at least seven square miles, again projecting beneath thin alluvium.  Breccia pipes, large areas of pebbles and cobbles of rounded fragments along with copper, lead, zinc, potassium, manganese, and some silver metallization that are indicative of porphyry copper deposits (s) were observed and go along with these porphyry copper mineral associate leakage zones.  They are indicating the large geophysical and geochemical anomalies we have already detected by those studies are indeed from porphyry copper mineral zones below.   This is final validation and these breccia pipes and associated copper metals are specific leakage zones from depth.  They, with further confirmation and detailing, could be our first drilling targets.

Continuing work at Hay Mountain over the last several weeks has identified important surface occurrences of green copper oxides (malachite and chrysocolla) by the use of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Niton XL3t GOLDD+ XRF (able to analyze 34  elements in about three minutes).  This copper is associated with quartz veining (hair line to massive veins 5 or more feet in thickness) which cements fractured limestone rock.  In addition detailed geologic work is being done in conjunction with the Niton data collection.  With each location we have used an iPhone app called Theodolite which yields a high resolution photograph with the GPS location, altitude, direction the photo is being taken and the inclination of the camera in two planes, as well as a time and date stamp.  It is verification of the Niton reading which also has a GPS locator on it and automated recording of the quantity of the elements read and a camera that looks through the X-ray so the exact spot being analyzed is recorded.  All of this is downloaded nightly into our base camp computer. Please read “Five Reasons Why We Love XRF (and you should too!)” to get more information on this wonderful instrument.

This has resulted in identification of numerous locations of green copper outcropping in small blebs over large areas.  These are associated with massive fracturing of limestone which has been invaded by minor sulfide bearing white quartz (silica) which in turn contains porphyry copper associate metals including lead, zinc, molybdenum, potassium, manganese, vanadium occasional silver, uranium, vanadium and copper.  In this instance, these elements can only be seen and measured by the Niton.  When we detect zinc, lead, moly, or potassium, it is indication that oxide copper is nearby.  These elements generally, but not always, occur  in breccia pipes with rounded limestone fragments which are surrounded by powdered rock matrix (matrix supported breccia) and angular breccia in which clasts support each other (clast supported breccia).

Because we are interested in going to the least expensive type of mine to build and operate – either an open pit copper heap leach electro winning mine, or an in – situ copper mine in place leach and electrowinning mine. The green copper oxide identified by the Niton XRF analyzer may be initial drilling targets for such mines.
